Garden Route Eye Clinic supports National Eye Care Awareness month. To lessen the burden on our Provincial Hospitals, we are performing cataract surgeries during October at George Surgical Centre for patients in our community who cannot afford private healthcare.
A total of 40 cataract surgeries will be performed and 1 strabismus surgery. All our surgeons at Garden Route Eye Clinic perform these surgeries free of charge.
Glaucoma Awareness Week: Know the Facts, Protect your vision.
During the eye exam, you might be given eye drops to dilate (widen) your pupils, which gives the ophthalmologist a better view of your eyes.
There are several tests that an ophthalmologist might use to diagnose glaucoma:
✅ Visual acuity test: Assesses the smallest letter you can read on a standardised chart.
✅ Eye pressure test: Measures the pressure level in your eye.
✅ Visual field test: Checks for any ‘missing’ areas in your vision.
✅ Ophthalmoscopy: Examines the interior of the eye (using a special tool called an ophthalmoscope).
✅ Gonioscopy: Examines the area where the fluid should drain out of your eye, to check if there is a blockage.
✅ OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) Scan of the Optic nerve: Determines if your optic nerve has been damaged.
